In 1947, Marjorie Stoneman Douglas wrote in her environmental classic, “The River of 
Grass.” In it, she states: “There are no other Everglades in the world. “They are, they always have been, one of the unique regions of the Earth, remote, never wholly known.” It was a testament to a change in perspective.
