Sunbrella® Horizon® Marine Vinyl and a Commitment to Sustainability

A day on the water with Sunbrella Horizon Marine Vinyl.

When Sunbrella introduced fade-resistant fabrics to the marine market more than 60 years ago, it set a new standard for woven fabric offerings in the industry. Since then, Sunbrella has continued to innovate industry-leading fabrics that provide outstanding performance with sustainable manufacturing processes. Sunbrella is a proud sponsor of Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, renewing its support this year as a Silver Sponsor.

One of the newest innovations from Sunbrella is Horizon Marine Vinyl. Horizon is the first engineered synthetic leather from Sunbrella which combines the look of leather with the softness and strength of Sunbrella fabric. An extremely cleanable surface that is both fade and UV resistant, Horizon stands up to all the challenges of constant exposure to marine conditions.

Sunbrella Horizon long-lasting marine vinyl upgrades your boat seating to feel ultra-soft and comfortable.

Horizon is designed to resist cold cracking and fading. It offers four-way stretch and recovery which prevents puddling and prolongs the lifetime of the fabric. Horizon is also bleach cleanable to deal with common marine stains such as mold, mildew, and salt residue.

“Sunbrella identified a need for softer, longer-lasting upholstery for the marine market, and we felt it essential to carry the brand’s technical expertise through this new product line,” said Bill McDaniel, marine market manager for Sunbrella. “We invested in extensive research and developed a solution that extends the brand’s legendary performance into a new line.”

Sunbrella Horizon covers a diverse palette including Textil which features a woven textural embossing.

Sunbrella is the first and only brand in the marine industry to offer a three-year warranty for the Horizon line against bacterial staining. Commonly known as “pinking,” Sunbrella Horizon features proprietary technology resistance to this metabolic process that has traditionally been difficult to prevent and treat. Additionally, Horizon carries a five-year product warranty against the loss of strength and color that may be expected from normal exposure to sun and water elements.

Horizon is offered in two distinctive embossed patterns with a smooth matte finish — Textil and Capriccio. Available in 30+ styles with 25 color options, Horizon is made with the same pigments used to produce woven Sunbrella fabrics, ensuring a color match for complete boat customization.

Sunbrella Horizon keeps your boat looking beautiful for years of fishing trips to come.

Sustainability and Sunbrella

David Swers, President of Glen Raven Custom Fabrics, explains the environmental benefits of Sunbrella Horizon: “With Sunbrella Horizon, our goal is to provide a product that is long-lasting, therefore reducing the environmental impact of replacements. However, our commitment to sustainability goes far beyond that. Recently, we have outlined our goals in our first-ever corporate sustainability report to share our commitments more publicly.”

As part of this plan, Sunbrella aims to be powered by 100 percent certified renewable energy by 2025 and are committed to being carbon-neutral for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. Another example of the Sunbrella sustainability commitment is the Recycle My Sunbrella program. This program allows fabricators and consumers to participate in recycling processes once a product reaches the end of its long lifecycle; the initiative has collected one million pounds of fabric that overwise would have ended up in a landfill, with the goal of diverting an additional one million pounds by 2025.

Sunbrella is also making an on-the-ground difference in our communities by supporting more than 200 nonprofits, locally and globally, through board leadership, creative partnerships, associate campaigns, volunteer programs and financial assistance. Bonefish & Tarpon Trust is one of these nonprofits, and Sunbrella is proud to renew support for BTT as a Silver Sponsor. Through this relationship, Sunbrella is able to help BTT continue to promote healthy fisheries and their marine environments for generations to come.
