Florida Keys Bonefish Fishery Assessment

florida keys bonefish survey

Help us take the pulse of the South Florida bonefish fishery by completing this 15-minute survey.

The survey will ask you to share information about your best bonefishing ever AND your bonefishing in 2024 for the South Florida regions where you target bonefish. By combining these two pieces of information from you and others, we can assess the current state of the bonefish fishery and how it’s changed over time

Recalling your best bonefishing ever may take a little while–we appreciate your efforts and encourage you to look back at photos if that helps you remember.

The survey is anonymous and we do not collect any identifiable information. Survey results will be shared in early 2025. Thank you so much for your input!

About the Project

Did you know that 75% of the world’s fisheries don’t have a stock assessment? This is true for valuable sportfish like bonefish, tarpon, and permit. For conservation measures to be effective, we need high-quality information on how our fisheries are doing. Our greatest source of this information is you, the guides and anglers who know the fisheries best!

BTT’s Bonefish Fishery Assessment will be conducted every three years to inform conservation efforts and management actions. We also plan to conduct assessment surveys for tarpon and permit in the Florida Keys and Biscayne Bay, and to apply this method to regions beyond Florida.

Numerous factors, including habitat loss and degradation and water quality declines, have hurt our bonefish population in the Florida Keys. Quantifying changes in the fishery and fish population is powerful information that we can use to push for the improvements needed to restore the fishery. This survey is an essential component to our overall conservation approach, just like identifying and protecting spawning locations. Consider this survey as an opportunity for you to contribute to the future of the fishery and an investment in the conservation process.

Guide and angler input is essential to BTT’s research! Sign up for our newsletter and follow us on social media for updates on this and future research projects benefiting flats fisheries.
